The call to journey together

Réseau Compassion Network (RCN), the Catholic Network for Women’s Equality (CNWE – Western Canada Region), the Grey Nuns of Montreal (SGM), and the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM), are pleased to invite you to a conversation with Newfoundland Sister of Mercy Elizabeth Davis (RSM). Elizabeth was one of fifty-four women among the 365 voting members, who participated in the Synod on Synodality at the Vatican, from October 1-29 2023.

Sister Elizabeth will share with us her experience with the Synod’s listening and discernment sessions, and some implications of being “a synodal church in mission". She will also share some thoughts on what may come next as we continue to move along this path of synodality, which will conclude with the closing session of the Synod in October 2024.

The Zoom session will be 1 ½ hours in length. There will be an opportunity for small group sharing, as well as a plenary forum to engage directly with Sr. Elizabeth. The Zoom room will stay open for 30 minutes after the official end for those interested in further conversation.

Prayer for Christian Unity

The Regina Council of Churches invites you to a city-wide ecumenical worship service at Lakeview United Church (3200 McCallum Ave.) on Sunday, January 21 at 3:00 pm. The preacher will be Cam Fraser, Director of Growth and Ministry Development, United Church of Canada.

Join together with Christians across Regina as we pray for Christian unity. The 2024 theme is "You shall love the Lord your God ... and your neighbour as yourself" based on Luke 10:25-37. The resources were prepared by an ecumenical team in Burkina Faso.

Sun. Jan. 21, 3pm at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Ave., Regina

This service will be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/@LakeviewUnitedRegina

SINGERS: A joint choir will rehearse at 2:00 pm at Lakeview Church. Contact Nick Jesson at njesson@archregina.sk.ca for details.

The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated by churches around the world in January or at another time of year. For more information, see https://weekofprayer.ca

Also during the Week of Prayer:

The De Margerie Lectures on Christian Reconciliation and Unity with the Rev. Dr. Karen Petersen Finch.

The quest for Christian unity has traditionally been initiated at the international level between official leaders of Christian denominations, with the effects of their dialogue expected to trickle down to local Christian communities. In Grassroots Ecumenism, Karen Petersen Finch upends this process, proposing an approach to Christian unity that begins in your neighbourhood. She draws directly from her experience equipping everyday Christians to know their own Christian tradition more thoroughly and to engage thoughtfully with separated Christians down the street and around the corner.
Wed. Jan. 24, 7pm, Re-imagining Lay People as Stewards of Doctrine (Campion College, University of Regina)
in-person or livestreamed at https://bit.ly/DeMargerie2024

Thurs. Jan. 25, 7pm, Doctrine as the Fuel of Renewal (St. Thomas More College, Saskatoon)
in-person or livestreamed at https://bit.ly/DeMargerie2024
What do the ecumenical dialogues say about the Eucharist? What consensus has been found? Karen believes that local dialogue holds the promise of breaking through historic barriers to agreement. Drawing on her extensive experience of local dialogue on the topic of the Eucharist/Holy Communion/Lord's Supper, in this workshop, Karen will discuss ways to promote dialogue between neighbourhood churches.
Sat., Jan. 27, 10am, The Eucharist - Where is Jesus? (Christ the King Parish, 3239 Garnet St, Regina)
All are welcome. No registration required.

LICCF presents RUTH in 5 sessions Sundays 6:30-8:00 MST Starts Jan 7, 2024

Bring along: a translation of the book of Ruth from the Hebrew scriptures;

a notebook for your responses

THE STUDY

The character Ruth is known widely for her spoken line to her mother-in-law Naomi, “Wherever you will go, I will go,” but what is the rest of the story about these biblical widows? How is this narrative in four chapters a teacher and a light for us in today’s world of border-crossers, the often-heard sentiment that “things should stay the way they’ve always been,” and women’s role in society, in the Church? Join us (LICCF) for 5 Sunday evenings to pray with, reflect on, and discuss the book of Ruth with audio commentary by Pádraig Ó Tuama, theologian, and written excerpts from Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg’s chapter on Ruth in her book The Murmuring Deep: Reflections on the Biblical Unconscious.

            REGISTER

Please register at the website LICCF.ca at the “Bible Study” tab to get on the email list for materials. One week or so prior to each zoom gathering, Teresa will send out her study questions and the commentary to prepare for the gathering.

CIRCLES on Zoom, an exercise in listening.

We’ll use a “circle” format in breakout rooms. At the start, someone establishes an order of participant names for each round. Always allow for a “pass” and “return” to the participant if desired. Someone reads the question for that round. Each person responds in order without interruption or cross talk. Quiet is welcome. After sharing on the question, a final round offers people a chance to mention something that touched them, that they wonder about, are grateful for or that they noticed (not a discussion per se).

ZOOM LINK Repeating for 5 Sunday nights https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83332781787

STARTS January 7 and runs weekly until February 4 6:30 – 8:30 MST 8:30-10 PM ET

Please hold in your prayers Sandy and Rod Pangracs, who were involved in a serious car accident Wednesday, Jan. 3. They are the parents of Ky, partner of Kathy Cameron's son Ian.  Rod was driving, and Sandy passenger when they were struck at speed by a car that drifted into them and hit the passenger side. Rod had tried to avoid a colision but was unable to do so.

Rod is shaken up but no serious injuries. Sandy did not fare so well. As of Thursday morning she has not regained consciousness, and last night (Wednesday) was waiting in emergency for an ICU bed. She suffered major trauma to the right side of her body, fracturing her arm and leg in several place, and sustained injury to her liver and spleen. She has been seen by the surgeon, and it sounds like she was not stable enough to undergo surgery yet. She is in for a long and complicated recovery, if she can get through the next few days.

A request also for prayers for the other driver and any passengers in that vehicle.

The support of the community is greatly appreciated by Kathy and all the family who are gathered around Rod and Sandy at this time.

We are here for one another.
Jane

Jane K. requests:  Please remember in your prayers the family of one of my sisters-in-law,  Helen.  Her brother, Richard, and his wife,  Sarah, were in a serious automobile accident in Jasper, Indiana.   Richard died a few days later.

Prayers of the People of God at the Eucharist on January 1st -- Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God

P: On this World Day of Prayer for Peace and the Solemnity of Mary, and recognizing the Holy Family, we humbly but earnestly bring our prayer and ask that you receive them, O God:

For the church family to be united in faith and purpose, living out our baptismal promises and allowing all with a call to leadership to be able to live out their vocations, we pray: R. Receive our prayer O God.

For families represented by all forms of parents, caregivers, and guardians, that all love their children unselfishly and guide them to live in truth, wholeness, and justice, recognizing their dignity as children of God, as well as the responsibility that it brings, we pray: R.

For healing in families divided in their relationships, and for nurturing and sustaining love to be recognized, from which all actions flow, we pray: R.

For families separated by poverty, addictions, war, disaster, displacement, immigration, and for those who are destroyed by prejudice or victimized by the arrogance or power-seeking of others, we pray: R.

For families who are mourning the loss of loved ones during this time of Emmanuel, to recognize and be consoled by love and compassion, we pray: R

For the Earth and the whole family of creation, that all recognize and work to heal the pain and destruction caused by uncaring, unheeding, or thoughtlessness of humanity, we pray: R.

And for all those gathered here as a family in Christ – those present in person and those present in spirit – for us to be able to live our lives from the gospel of Peace. And for peace in the whole world, we pray: R.

P: With grateful hearts and faith in the knowledge of your goodness, we offer our prayers to you, God of overflowing goodness. You know our needs even before we ask. In your compassion and love, hear our prayers and answer them in Jesus’ name.

R. Amen.

Prayers Of The People For Christmas (Christmas Eve Eucharist)

P: As we celebrate the coming of Jesus among us, as one of us, let us lift up our prayers with deep faith, with deep hope, and with deep rejoicing.

R:  We Pray To You, Incarnate God/de.

V: For the victims of war and violence in places throughout the world, especially

the children, the refugees, and those who are sick, that they receive timely and compassionate care….  R./

That world leaders will sincerely seek ways to lasting peace in places where there is war and political instability, especially in Israel and Palestine, in Ukraine and Russia, in Darfur and other African nations, and elsewhere… R./

For those who feel the darkness of captivity by grief, loneliness, depression or addictions: that they may find a little piece of light in our caring, and courage and support to accept the liberation you offer…  R./

For those who work with the poor, those without shelter, the hungry, and many others, that they many be strengthened to continue their work of love, as they remember that these were the people among whom you walked.  R./

For all members of our Mary of Magdala community, local and on-line: that they be richly blessed in their needs and that we might listen deeply for the inner voice of God/de within and respond to you calling with gracious and generous hearts.  R./

P: For whom do you wish to pray? (Pause)

O Holy Womb of God/de, with grateful hearts we lift our prayers to you. In your love and mercy hear and answer them. Birth each of us into your image and likeness that Christ may again reveal your love and concern to our world. We ask this in the name of Jesus our brother. All: Amen.

It has been suggested that we honour our beloved Sr. Patricia with a memorial fund. Donations will go to local Truth and Reconciliation projects with which she was involved.

Since she considered us her parish, the though is that ministry to the Indigenous people of Regina was truly her mission among us and that it would be a special way we could honour her and her memory.

If you would like to contribute to this memorial fund, donations may be made
      by e-transfer to mmiccRegina@gmail.com
by cheque upon request for the street address by writing to mmiccRegina@gmail.com
