The process for submissions for the October 2024 session of the Synod of Bishops continues.

In the Regina Archdiocese, communities are invited to hold listening sessions on what members understand and take away from the Syntheses Report from the first session.  Our Synod Team is soliciting your input in the days ahead.  A number of you were present to hear Sr. Elizabeth Davis, one of the Canadian delegates, share her experience and reflections.  Also, Bridget Mary Meehan of ARCWP has assembled highlights from the Vatican Synthesis Report. Access to a Sr. Elizabeth's recording and the slides she used, as well as Bridget Mary's highlights can be found here:

Our community Synod Team suggests that we refine our focus to the issue of “Women in the Life and Mission of the Church,” particularly the inclusion of the ordination of women to the priesthood, which has been avoided in the Synopsis Report.

We welcome you to send the team and reflections you have on this, or any other synod topic.

A brief report on our MMICC insights is to be submitted to the Archdiocesan Synod Office by April 8.  Therefore the MMICC Synod Team is asking that submissions from MMICC members be submitted to mmiccRegina@gmail.com or via the comments form by March 19th.

The Archdiocese of Regina is inviting us to sessions on Zoom related to the Synod:

MMICC is preparing to participate in the Archdiocese of Regina Synod events according to the following schedule:

March 19 - Submissions from MMICC members to MMICC Synod Team (before or on this date)
March 20 - 7:00 pm - Archdiocesan event on Zoom
March 23 - 10:00 am
- Archdiocesan event on Zoom
April 6 - 10:00 am - Archdiocesan event on Zoom
April 8 - MMICC report to Archdiocese
April 13 - 10:00 am
- Archdiocesan event on Zoom

MMICC report sent to the Archdiocese of Regina Synod Team Coordinator and Archbishop

Nick Jesson
Archdiocese of Regina Synod Team Coordinator

Archbishop Don Bolen
Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Regina

We are grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the ongoing conversation of the Synod process.  We recognize in the Synthesis report many of our ideas from the listening phase before the first Synod session.

From our perspective, what was missing or needs emphasis, follows:

The ordination of women to the priesthood is the biggest issue facing the Catholic Church today.  Yet, according to Sr. Elizabeth Davies, our Canadian Delegate, it was not even brought to the table for discussion.  How can this be an authentic Synodal process unless ALL people, especially the marginalized, are walked with, talked with and listened to?

Pope Francis has conversed with ordained women from the Lutheran and Anglican Churches, about women’s ordination.  However, he excluded these conversations with women from the Catholic Church.

There are Catholic women who have transitioned from the Catholic Church to other denominations, so they could answer their divine call to priestly ministry.

There are a growing number of Catholic women from around the world who have responded to their call of ordination and are pastoring in an emerging and inclusive Church.

The Catholic Church tells us that the baptized have co-responsibility in its mission and by virtue of Baptism, all women and men have equal dignity.  However, why is it that 80% of Church attendees, who are women, are relegated to subservient roles?  Where in the gospel we follow, does it tell us that only 20% of a Church community is fit for full leadership?

Pope Francis has called on governments to change laws that harm women.  However, he excluded the Canon Laws of the Catholic Church that are responsible for the harmful spiritual abuse that women experience from their treatment in the Church. The use of inclusive language would be a step forward to equality and dignity for women in the Church.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if, through this Synod, the Catholic Church became a shining example for all the world to follow, by changing its treatment of women from subservient roles to roles of equality, inclusion, nondiscrimination and fairness?

Women must be talked with and listened to, if this is to be an authentic time of Synodality with God’s holy people and of listening to the Holy Spirit.  The male hierarchy in charge of the Synod cannot, in good conscience, decide what issues will or will not be brought to the table for discussion.

Thank you for your continuing work and involvement in this important Synod process.

Respectfully,

June Krogan
Mary of Magdala Inclusive Catholic Community Team Coordinator

Draft Synod Report -- Archdiocese of Regina
The Archdiocesan Synod Team has released a draft report titled "To Be a Church in Mission" that is the product of the spring consultations in the Archdiocese.  This is Part I of three reports that will be prepared. Part I will be sent to the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for consideration in October 2024.
Two additional reports are planned:
  • Part II is “Best Practices in Parish and Archdiocese” and will be prepared by mid-May. This will also be sent to the Synod of Bishops.
  • Part III is “Recommendations to Parish and Archdiocesan bodies.” This will contain recommendations found throughout the 3-year Synod process as well as proposals found in the Synod Report “A Synodal Church in Mission“
  • For further information, contact Nicholas Jesson, Synod Coordinator at njesson@archregina.sk.ca or see https://archregina.sk.ca/group/synod-2021-2024/

Exploring the Spirituality, Leadership and Service of Catholic Women Priests with Sharon Henderson Callahan and Jeanette Rodriguez

Join WOC for a conversation with theologians Sharon Henderson Callahan and Jeannette Rodriguez, authors of the new book, “Women Called to Catholic Priesthood: From Ecclesial Challenge to Spiritual Renewal.”

The book explores the contexts, calls, journeys, spirituality, and theology of women called to priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church in a compelling and carefully crafted ethnographic work. Posing the questions of how their stories illustrate both ecclesial challenges and spiritual renewal, the authors encourage readers to thoughtfully engage these women on their own terms.

It has been suggested that we honour our beloved Sr. Patricia with a memorial fund. Donations will go to local Truth and Reconciliation projects with which she was involved.

Since she considered us her parish, the though is that ministry to the Indigenous people of Regina was truly her mission among us and that it would be a special way we could honour her and her memory.

If you would like to contribute to this memorial fund, donations may be made
    by e-transfer to mmiccRegina@gmail.com
by cheque upon request for the street address by writing to mmiccRegina@gmail.com
