Together – Gathering of the People of God

Sunday, October 1, 2023
3 pm at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 2049 Scarth Street, Regina

An ecumenical prayer service will be held in Regina in spiritual communion with Christians around the world and with the Together 2023 ecumenical prayer vigil in Rome with the leaders of different Churches, to unite us in praise and silence, in listening to the Word.

Singers and musicians are invited to join a special joint choir for this ecumenical service. There will be a rehearsal at 1:30pm on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 2049 Scarth Street, Regina.

The Together 2023 gathering coincides with the opening of the Synod of Bishops called by Pope Francis. The theme of this year's synod is "synodality", part of a 3 year reflection on how we walk together with the Holy Spirit in communal discernment. So, the Together 2023 theme invites us to reflect on how we are the people of God, how we share together in God's mission in the world, and how we listen to one another and to the Holy Spirit.

Through baptism and the Scriptures, are we not sisters and brothers in Christ, united in a communion that is still imperfect but nevertheless real? Is it not Christ who calls us and opens a way for us to go forward with him as fellow travellers, together with those who live on the margins of our societies? On this journey, in a dialogue that reconciles, we want to remember that we need each other, not so that we might be stronger together but as a contribution to peace in the human family.

In gratitude for this growing sense of communion, we can find the momentum needed to meet today’s challenges faced with the polarisations that fracture the human family and the cry of the earth. In encounter and mutual listening, let us walk together as the people of God.

Peace, Faith, and Humanity in Times of Crisis
Peace Studies Lecture with retired Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire

St. Thomas More College is pleased to announce that the Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire will be presenting this year's Peace Studies lecture: Peace, Faith, and Humanity in Times of Crisis. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 7pm. Please note that the lecture will now be held at St. Joseph High School’s Theatre (115 Nelson Road) and will be an in-person only event.

Roméo Dallaire is founder of the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace, and Security, the global partnership with the mission to end and prevent the recruitment and use of children in violence.  A celebrated advocate for human rights, especially in regards to child soldiers, veterans, and the prevention of mass atrocities, General Dallaire is also a respected government and UN advisor and former Canadian Senator.

General Dallaire was appointed Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda prior to and during the 1994 genocide.  General Dallaire provided the United Nations with information about the planned massacre, which ultimately took more than 800,000 lives in less than 100 days; yet, permission to intervene was denied and the UN withdrew its peacekeeping forces.  General Dallaire, along with a small contingent of Ghanaian and Tunisian soldiers and military observers, disobeyed the command to withdraw and remained in Rwanda to fulfill their ethical obligation to protect those who sought refuge with the UN forces. His courage and leadership during this mission earned him the Meritorious Service Cross, the United States Legion of Merit, the Aegis Award on Genocide Prevention, and the affection and admiration of people around the globe.  His defiant dedication to humanity during that mission has been well-documented in films and books, including his own award-winning account: Shake Hands with the Devil: the Failure of Humanity in Rwanda.

Recommended by June K.:
Growing in Wisdom: Seeking Deeper Generativity is a two-year program for those who are embracing the second half of life and who are longing to explore the spiritual invitations of their wisdom years. How do I give my life to the world? And how do I prepare for eventual illness, diminishment and death, so that my death is my final blessing to my family, community and the world?

This program is rooted in the Forest Dwelling Program, Oblate School of Theology, and the ground-breaking work of Fr. Ron Rolheiser OMI. The program involves four 5-day intensives (September and February) over two years, monthly meetings with other participants in Elder Circles, a monthly meeting with a spiritual director, and optional monthly book studies. The Growing in Wisdom program is primarily offered on zoom. Applications are now being accepted for the September 2023 – June 2025 program. For more information, please contact Nancy Phillips, Coordinator, growinginwisdom@outlook.com.

Prayers of the Community during the Eucharist on August 26th

For the Church -- for equality in ministry; for humility, compassion, and justice in
leadership; and for wisdom in decision-making, we pray:
R. Help us to recognize Jesus in all we do.

For leaders everywhere -- of nations, of political parties, of advocacy groups, of faith
groups, in families – to lead with integrity, fairness, and love for all who count on them
for guidance and good decisions, we pray:
R. Help them to recognize the sacred in all they do.

For those who are endangered by flood, by wildfire, by forest fire, and by all natural
disasters, we pray:
R. May they find safety and solace in those who are coming to their aid.

For those whose lives are affected by war, poverty, abuse, discrimination, and other
wrongs, we pray:
R. May they find justice and the life Creator meant them to have.

For the physical healing of the earth, the emotional and physical healing of those who
suffer because of climate change, and for the strength of all humanity to work to
correct our failings in the care of creation, we pray:
R. Help us to be the change Jesus wants us to be.

For those who have died, those who are ill, and all who are in need of prayer for any
reason, including those already named and those who we hold in our hearts, we pray:
R. Help them feel your love and our compassion.

P: Gracious Holy One, help us to recognize Jesus in all we encounter and to act in service
in his name. R: Amen.

Mary of Magdala Inclusive Catholic Community Icon
Symbols and their significance (a statement of faith):

Budded Cross:
  • Budded cross has 3 circles for each bud at the end of each arm.
  • Early Christian tradition know this cross as the Apostles/Disciples cross.
  • The buds represent an unfolding rose, the symbol of love.  Mary of Magdala shared a special relationship with Jesus.  Through their mutual and generous sharing she came to understand the alchemy of self-emptying love which transforms eros into agape.
  • From her place as the Beloved, Mary of Magdala was the first to see the risen Christ and was sent as Apostle to the Apostles to proclaim the Easter message that love is stronger than death.
  • The three circles on the buds represent the Holy Trinity within a Christian context but was likely copied from early Celtic spirituality with the three circles representing earth, sky and sea, therefore it can be seen as Christianity within creation as a whole, a cosmic oneness.
  • The Budded Cross honours our call to discipleship, to follow the path of conscious love to fullness of life in the Risen Christ.

Outer Circle:
  • Representing God and infinity
  • The community lives within the mystery of God and is called by name to go forth
  • Mary recognized Jesus at the tomb when he called her by name and sent her forth to proclaim

Inner Circle:
  • The work of the community in following Christ as disciples
  • Eucharistic symbols of bread, wine and a towel represent self-giving love, sharing with and service to others
  • Helping and healing hands supporting the Eucharistic symbols represent the community being the body of Christ for others and ourselves
  • Hands of different color represent the inclusive mandate of the Mary of Magdala community

Triquetra Symbol – on the bottom leg of the cross:
  • Has its origin in Celtic spirituality and was taken into early Christian spirituality
  • Is a stylized wild goose, Celtic symbol of the Holy Spirit
  • Symbolizes unity and equality
  • We believe in the equality of the three in One; Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier.
  • We believe in the equality of all persons and, with all our brothers and sisters, experience the injustice of inequality just as Mary of Magdala did in her life time and continues to do so.

The icon is made of white birch from northern Saskatchewan.

It is a gift to Mary of Magdala Inclusive Catholic Community from wood carving artist, Doris Sheldon.
