fyi Patricia O. recommends this article: New Zealand Catholic women display 'pink shoes' to call for equality in the church
Hundreds of Catholic women in New Zealand contributed to a provocative public art protest on Sept. 18 calling for equality of women in the church. [Note: Leone M. RNDM, Patricia's friend and colleague, is a member of BE THE CHANGE.] Women's shoes were displayed during the "Pink Shoes into the Vatican" event Sept. 18 in Auckland, New Zealand. Read More Sunday, September 25th, is World Day of Prayer for Migrants and Refugees. Felix is pleased to announce that his cousin Halya D., a recent displaced person from Ukraine, has found a job as a seamstress with the fashion designer Prahsik. Patricia O. says: I was quite amazed how clear and strong the American Bishops spoke out about ordination as a matter of JUSTICE. Statement in the USCCB Synod report:
“There was a desire for stronger leadership, discernment, and decision-making roles for women – both lay and religious – in their parishes and communities: ‘people mentioned a variety of ways in which women could exercise leadership, including preaching and ordination as deacon or priest. Ordination for women emerged not primarily as a solution to the problem of the priest shortage, but as a matter of justice.’” Statement in the CCCB Synod report:
" . . . all regional reports acknowledged receiving requests that women be granted access to ordained ecclesial ministries." Eco-Justice: · Day of Climate Action on September 23rd. o https://davidsuzuki.org/what-you-can-do/top-10-ways-can-stop-climate-change Parable of the lost son by Aniela D. Jane K. recommends the following: For some time the Indigenous
Christian Fellowship (ICF), 3131 Dewdney Ave. has been providing
noon-time lunches. Several local churches including Eastside United
Church on Doan Ave., make the sandwiches with supplies provided from
donations received by ICF. Trinity Lutheran Church on 12th Ave.
distributes the sandwiches.
Eastside could use our help in their contribution to the program. Here is some info from Doug Sheurwater, the program coordinator at Eastside. Eastside United makes 100 sandwiches weekly on Friday mornings, usually 10:00-11:30, and gets them to Trinity Lutheran for distribution. They are basic PB&J, cheese whiz, etc. They add a muffin or cookies to the lunches when they are available. Presently they are making the sandwiches at ICF. They are looking at the possibility of making them in the kitchen at Living Sprit Centre instead. Especially if it means more helpers! (Eastside is one of the churches at Living Spirit Centre on Doan Ave.) They are working with a skeletal team of 6-8 people and would like to add more sandwich makers. Maybe enough for 3-4 teams so sandwich makers would be on once or twice a month rather than every week. Also, muffin and cookie makers could be used -- visions of a monthly baking bee to stock a freezer for the coming weeks!!! If you are interested in participating in this service to feed the hungry in our community, you can contact Doug Sheurwater. e-mail: dscheurwater@sasktel.net, or phone: 306-529-5009. Kathy C. recommends the homily given by Jane on the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 11, 2022. If you missed it or if you want to read it, click here for the Liturgy of the Word, including the midrash, and the homily. September is a busy month for Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous Justice activities in the days ahead:
The Season of Care for Creation continues until October 4th. You may want to check out this website which provides daily reflections to assist us to “Listen to the Voice of Creation” this season: https://www.csjoseph.org/season-of-creation/ Jane K. informs us that: Three days ago, Saskatchewan was awakened to the news of a brutal stabbing incident on James Smith Cree First Nation and the nearby community of Weldon. Ten people were dead and eighteen injured, some critically. It has been widely covered, so likely you have heard about it in the news. Thanks you to those who have send messages of empathy and prayers. Your solidarity with those directly affected and all of the people of the province is greatly appreciated. Until today, we knew very little about the victims. Now we know a little more: all but one were from the James Smith community (the other one was from Weldon), they were teachers, addiction counselors and first responders, security guards and honoured veterans, good neighbours; fathers, mothers, sons and daughters; aunties and uncles and cousins, kokums and nimosoms. Multiple members of families with the surname Burns were involved but full relationships among the families was not released. Survivors are dealing with the death of loved ones and attending to others who are in hospital in distant cities. The pain is unimaginable. Word is just in that suspect, Myles Sanderson, is now in police custody as of 3:30 p.m. CST today. The other suspect, his brother Damian, was discovered deceased on Monday in the James Smith community. Agencies around the province are
collecting donations to help the families who are in great need at this
time. In Regina, the Newo-Yotina
Friendship Centre is accepting donations per their facebook post
at: https://www.facebook.com/nyfcregina/ (see
attached for a list of suggested items). Deadline to receive
donations is 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 9. People from the
Center will be going to James Smith Cree Nation on Saturday and will
deliver donations received to those in need.
This
morning I prepared a small hamper with funds from F.R.O.G. (juice
boxes, pudding cups, instant coffee and hot chocolate, cookies and some
chocolates) and took it to the Centre in the name of our community. They
send their thanks.
Together
let us hold everyone in love and prayer as fear begins to fade and deep
mourning sets in as families bury their loved ones. May
Creator gift them with healing of bodies, minds and hearts and all will
be able to look forward in hope to a better tomorrow.
Judith P. of the Hospitality Team informs us of the following: The
Sisters of the Precious Blood have been here in Regina for 89 years,
but the Monastery will be closed near the end of September. They
will be missed.
A
Mass of Thanksgiving for their 89 years in the Archdiocese will take
place at Holy Rosary Cathedral on Tuesday, September 20 at 5:00
p.m. Some of the Sisters from Hamilton, London and Calgary will
also be present at the Mass, especially those who have been here in
Regina in the years past.
The Sisters are hoping that there will be a great number of persons who will attend this Mass of Thanksgiving for the prayerful service they have given to many over these past years. So I hope you will be able to join the Sisters at the Cathedral to wish them a fond farewell. And please pass on this information to other friends of yours who might wish to attend the Mass. Just imagine how many prayers were raised on high for the needs of others over these many years. The Sisters' ministry was definitely one of deep, loving prayerfulness, and they will continue to keep us all in their prayers even though they are far away. So please mark the date and time on your calendar and come to say good-bye to the Sisters. Rev.
Dr. Patricia Fresen was born in South Africa, studied theology in Rome
at the University of St. Thomas and the Gregoriana, and was then
invited to join the faculty of the National Seminary in
Pretoria. She later completed the Doctorate in Theology and
after that she taught theology at the Catholic University in
Johannesburg.
However,
as a direct result of her ordination to the priesthood in 2003, Dr.
Fresen was forced to leave the Dominican Order, of which she had been a
member for 45 years; and she had to vacate her position at Catholic
University.
She
subsequently left her homeland to take up residence in
Germany. In recent years, Dr. Fresen has returned to South
Africa.
Ordained a bishop in 2005, Dr. Fresen has
ordained many women priests in Europe, Canada, the USA and now South
Africa.
She
has been a well-respected conference speaker and retreat leader in all
those countries. At present, her most frequently-requested
topics are on the translation of the Gospels from the original Aramaic,
which was the language of Jesus. She did a course with Prof.
Neil Douglas-Klotz on the Aramaic of the Gospels and she says it was
life-changing.
She will speak in a PCS forum on 15th September about the Our Father translated from the Aramaic. Jane K. recommends the following:
