What are the next steps we are willing to take with our Indigenous relatives on the road to reconciliation?

Pope Francis has completed his “penitential voyage” to Canada offering apologies to the Indigenous People. All aspects of the trip have been analyzed – some with praise, some with criticisms, some with condemnation.

Regardless of whether our expectations have been met or not, the crucial question is where do we go from here?  What are the next steps we are willing to take with our Indigenous relatives on the road to reconciliation?  Let us not waste a moment to make our commitment and go forward walking the road together.

Assistance for displaced Ukrainian People

Felix and Jane K. are pleased to say that we are helping Felix's cousins Halya and Tanya, displaced persons from Kalush, Ukraine, with their move to Regina.  They have now moved into their new apartment at Evergreen Estates.
  • The second phase of their move took place August 1st.  We had the help of five women and five men to carry in two bed sets, a table and four chairs, a desk, a sofa, and several book shelves.
  • Thanks to Dara Lesuik a large warehouse on the Regina Exhibition Grounds has been acquired and is filling up with donations of furniture, dishes, clothes, toys, and other household necessities for the use of Ukrainian displaced persons.
  • On behalf of MMICC charitable effort, the F.R.O.G team will establish sub-accout to receive donations to aid Ukrainian displaced persons.
  • Finding a job appears to be our cousin's top priority, as probably with all newly arrived Ukrainians.  Please contact us if you know of job openings or if your friends know of job openings.  Halya has experience working in a large bakery, mainly in the office, but is willing to take an entry level job.

Patricia O. of the MMICC Indigenous Relations Team recommends:  Tuesday, August 16th at 12 noon ET (10:00 am CST).  Join National Catholic Reporter Christopher White as he discusses his travel to Canada with Pope Francis for his historic, penitential pilgrimage apologizing to the Indigenous peoples for the role the Catholic Church played in their forced assimilation, genocidal violence, and physical and spiritual abuse, especially in residential schools.

I humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous peoples,” Francis said to a large crowd of Indigenous people in Maskwacis, Alberta, the site of a former residential school.

People from the First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities praised Pope Francis for his words but also regretted that it took so long for the apology.

Join us as Christopher White talks about what he saw, heard, and experienced and what is likely to happen next.

How to Face the Mess We’re in with Unexpected Resilience and Creative Power

    Thursday, September 1, 4pm EST, 1pm PST
led by your Creation In Crisis team

Bob Isenberger Penny Andrews Gail Ransom
The challenges we face can be difficult to think about. Climate change, war, political polarization, economic upheaval, and the extinction of so many species together create a planetary emergency of overwhelming proportions. How do live within such an enormous destruction of all that we know?
This crisis of soul and soil is both massive and personal. While our scientists track the waning of our geosphere and the destruction of our biosphere, we may well be asking, What does it mean to be human in this moment? How do we respond and live our own truth as the world we have known falls apart?

This session will include both theory and practice as our Creation in Crisis team leads us through the key concepts presented by Macy and Johnstone in their tenth anniversary revised edition of their book, Active Hope, How to Face the Mess We're in with Unexpected Resilience & Creative Power. We will consider the wisdom of Macy and her transformational paradigm, The Work That Reconnects and learn how to build resilience and strength, and to embody Active Hope to a wounded world.
About Joanna Macy Chris Johnstone and Active Hope
Drawing on decades of teaching an empowerment approach known as the Work That Reconnects, the authors guide us through a transformational process informed by mythic journeys, modern psychology, spirituality, and holistic science. This process equips us with tools to face the difficult times we’re in and to play our role in the collective transition,, what Macy calls The Great Turning, to a life-sustaining society.

Patricia O. of the MMICC Gender Justice Team recommends the following:

    Header

Pope Francis has announced a consistory for the creation of 20 new cardinals on August 27, followed by an extraordinary meeting of the world's cardinals on August 29-30 to reflect on his new Apostolic Constitution, Praedicate Evangelium.

Now we could throw a lot of Vatican math at you about how many cardinal-electors there are, how many Pope Francis has appointed, the percentages of cardinals from various parts of the world... but one number remains very clear:

Zero. Zero women. Zero women will join the College of Cardinals. Zero women will be eligible to elect the next Pope. And ironically, zero women will be in dialogue with the cardinals about the new constitution that now allows women to head dicasteries, a role traditionally reserved for cardinals and bishops.

The exclusion of women from leadership in the Catholic church is one of the greatest cons-in-history. And WOC is going to Rome to make sure the consistency of the church's sexism is called out. A con-SISTER-y of RESISTory, if you will.

Please make an urgent "Ministry of Irritation" donation today to ensure our message is heard loud and clear. Your support and solidarity at this moment is crucial.

With our Women's Ordination Worldwide partners, we'll be on the ground in Rome shining a bright light on this display of patriarchy through creative, courageous witnesses, prayer vigils, and media work. We're keeping our schemes under wraps for now, but you can expect regular updates from us while we're in Rome.

Please give generously so that we might carry our message to the Vatican and continue this essential ministry. WOC needs your help.

    Support our efforts in Rome!

    Thank you so much,

    Kate McElwee

    Executive Director

    Women cardinals?

"Theologically and theoretically, it is possible." — Fr. Federico Lombardi, SJ

While canon law currently specifies that a cardinal must either be a priest or a bishop, it could be possible for the church to name women as cardinals (without changing the church's teaching of reserving ordination to men)*, as cardinals are not ordained into their ministry. Appointing a lay person would require a change to, or at least a dispensation from, the law.

And although (since the 16th century) cardinals have come mostly from the ranks of priests and bishops, that has not always been the case... Read more
